A liesurely night at the Range

Saturday nights and the "Boys" don't have much to do, bring out the "toys" and head to the range and have some fun. Someone brings some decent digicams next time around. These cell cams do not do justice to the 'good' looks of the "pistoleros"(pistols..hehehe).

Accident or Deadly Assault?

Manny Castillo, 15 years old, on life support and not expected to live from injuries suffered in a School Rugby match. A 16 year- old- boy (can not be identified under the Juvenile Justice Act) is charged of assault and maybe upgraded in the event of Manny's death.

The family of 15 year- old- boy , lying brain dead at the Sick Kids and is not expected to live from injuries suffered in a Rugby Match, is urging the Peel Police not to charge the opponent for assault causing injury and may be upgraded if and when the boy is taken off the life support.

The family already announced that they are donating the boy’s organs.

Manny Castillo, immigrated from Mexico with his family as 12 year- old- boy.
Manny is a star athlete at Lorne Park Secondary School in Mississauga, a forward for the school's Spartans rugby team and captain of the defense line for the football team, on which he plays linebacker.

In the last few seconds of a rugby game Wednesday against the Erindale Raiders, he and an opposing 16-year-old were seen grappling together.

Manny was left on the ground with critical head injuries. Last night he remained on life support at the Hospital for Sick Children with his chances of survival rated zero.

Peel Regional police have charged the opposition player with aggravated assault, charges that could be upgraded in the event of Manny's death.

The player cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice ACT.

The family is unanimous of not pressing charges.

But Peel Police said that their investigation led them to believe the altercation that resulted in injury was not part of the Game and they still are investigating for the motives.

Please note, that in Criminal cases the victims or families of the victims are not the parties to decide if criminal charges are to be laid, but the Police authorities based on evidence as a result of their investigations.

A coroner's report in the event of Manny's death may well decide the final decision of the of the police authorities.

Even in Professional sports, where violence is a part of the game, like the game of hockey, unprovoked and malicious intent to injure could also result in police laying charges.

Update: Manny Castillo has died of his injuries. Taken off life support this morning (12:00PM. May 11, 2007, Live T.V. broadcast). No news from Peel Police if they are upgrading the charges yet. The family is still firm on its decision urging the authorities not to press charges.

A rare tragedy

Teenage sporting deaths remain extremely rare. Manny Castillo's life-threatening injuries at Lorne Park Secondary School recall earlier tragedies.

Feb. 23, 2007: Kyle Lamb, 13, dies while attempting a back flip off a snowboard jump in Caesarea, on Lake Scugog Feb. 12, 2007: Nicolas Lambden, 10, of Guelph, dies after being hit in the head with a puck during an outdoor shinny game.

Dec. 26, 2006: Alex Corrance, 17, a defenceman for the Mississauga Rebels, dies during the opening period of an east Toronto tournament. The coroner rules an underlying, undetected cardiac problem to be the cause of death.

May 2006: Harbord Collegiate student Frankie Chu, 18, collapses on the field during the league rugby opener. He dies a short time later.

Feb. 17, 1992: Skier Wendy Buda, 13, dies after what her family calls a "fluke" accident at Blue Mountain Ski Resort. She sustains serious head injuries while hitting a stand of trees during a Southern Ontario Juvenile Championship race.

Aug. 12, 1987: A 12-year-old Scarborough boy collapses and dies playing soccer on Midland Avenue Collegiate Institute grounds. Police say Kenneth Georgiopoulos may have died of a congenital heart defect that had gone undetected.

Compiled by Kathleen Power, Star Library:

Update: May 13: Peel Police Charged the 16-year-old from the opposing team for aggravated assault and was released to the custody of his Parents. The charge may be Up to manslaughter, but not until the investigation is completed.

Update: May 14: Toronto Star http://www.thestar.com/News/article/213531

Bereaved parents tell the Star that police should drop charges against other teen: `This is about what we really feel inside'

This is not about religion, this is about what we really feel inside," Manuel Castillo of Mississauga said quietly yesterday when asked why he might feel so forgiving toward a player making fatal contact with his 15-year-old, also named Manuel and called "Manny" by his friends.

"(The opposing player) didn't take a weapon and try to fire at my son," the father said.
"He didn't take a gun or a knife and try to kill him, absolutely not. To me, it is a terrible accident. In sports, accidents happen."

Asked if his son had any known medical condition that could have been a factor in the death, Castillo said he preferred to say nothing more abut the injury

He praised Peel regional police for their professionalism and support, and said police are prepared to interview him formally when he feels ready.

Investigation is still ongoing...

Ontario on the "Red Alert" (Early Warnings)

Ontario set to go on `red' alert

Apr 29, 2007 04:30
AM Josh Wingrove Staff Reporter

Plans for a provincial red-alert disaster information system were announced by the Ontario commissioner of emergency management yesterday.

The "Alert Ontario" system would be used in life-threatening situations for the public, including floods, tornadoes and pandemics, said Jay Hope. It would be employed in the same way as the Amber Alert missing-child system *, with broadcasts, road signs, email, text-messaging and lottery terminals used to alert the public.

A third alert level is proposed for lower-level emergencies.
Hope emphasized the growing frequency of disastrous weather, and urged Canadians to be prepared. "Emergencies are growing more and more – if not here in Ontario, then all around us," he said.Toronto has had its share of freak weather over the past few years.

Two summers ago, in the midst of an intense drought, the city was hit with a rainstorm on Aug. 19 that dropped 10 centimetres in one hour. Water rose to over a metre deep along Steeles Ave. and washed out a stretch of Finch Ave.

This is one good idea the Emergency people come up with. With all the weather emergencies and natural disaster happening, much of the destructive results can be minimized or avoided by timely warnings.

*The Amber Alert Missing- Child System has proven very effective in locating missing children during its existence. It broadcast the Alert in all available Media outlets including Road Warning Signs, Lottery Terminals besides all the normal outlets.

In the other not so happy note, the Toronto Raptors Basketball is on the verge of Elimination in the first round of NBA playoffs, trailing the New Jersey Nets 3-1. It is still possible to win three in row, but with the former Raptor Vince Carter playing his best playoff games ever, and point guard Jason Kidd back in old form that brought the Nets to the Final few years back, it’s a little too much of an undertaking, but again things are possible. Otherwise time to reflect on what has to be done next season for another exciting basketball and a better performance for the post season. Overall it was a good season.

Defending Champs Miami Heats already eliminated by the Chicago Bulls and the Orlando Magic as expected was no sweat for the Detroit Pistons.

My bet, it will be between the Bulls and the Phoenix Suns in the Finals. What’s yours?

The 'Dinos' are Back in Uniforms of the Toronto Raptors...

Jorge Garbajosa of Spain and Andrea Bargnani of Italy. The two Europeans are among the few of their fellow Europoeans who made the Raptors a very exciting team to watch and improve their chances for that ultimate prize in Basketball.
From Georgia Tech, Chris Bosh, power forward, centre and the Leader of the Team. We call him CB4, a hard working, scrapping and a very talented athlete. As compared to the much ballyhooed Vince Who???
Last night after beating the Charlotte Bobcats, the Raptors clinched the playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and lessened the Magic number to Three for the Atlantic Division Title.

In a city thirsting for Champions since the Major League Blue Jays won a back to back World Series Championships in early 90s and the Hockey Team, the Toronto Maple Leafs last won the Stanley Cup in 1967, this city and the surrounding communities and the whole country are jumping into the bandwagon along with the Long-Suffering fans of the Raptors for welcoming the new Sport heroes, the Toronto Raptors (Dino's).

The team was in the Playoffs five seasons ago, under the leadership of much anticipated, "Michael Jordan" of the future in Vince Carter, the Athletic, Acrobatic master of Dunks, but after getting into the second round and got beat by the NJ Nets on the final 7th game, they started the downward spiral and was not in the playoff since. And Vince faded away in NJ with his acting hurt very bad and back in the game a few minutes later. To me he’s a wasted Michael, but heck he is already a very wealthy man. He once said that he not only aspires to be like Jordan, but better.

With the new make up of the Young Team, (only Morris Peterson, been to the playoff with the team) under the Leadership of Chris Bosh (CB4) all of 23 years old, and a collection of talented European players in Spaniards Jose Calderon, Jorge Garbajosa and this last year Number One draft pick Andrea Bargnani of Spain (Jorge Garbajosa is out for the season of injuries and Bargnani is out recovering from emergency appendectomy), Big man from Slovenia, Rasho Nestorivic, a veteran NBA centre and the speediest of the Point Guard, T.J. Ford, (have you had a Ford lately?), the goal of Managements and the Coaching Staff is not just to qualify for playoff but win the division, the conference and onward the NBA Championship.

But before getting there, there is the Shaq and the Miami Heats, the defending Champions to deal with and the Detroit Pistons, who’s been there, done that and would want no other less than going back there. So it will be a very exciting Post Season basketball and being a Raptors fan, we believe we will win this Year Championship, Shaq and all.
